Jean-Baptiste Lully was an Italian-born French composer, instrumentalist, and dancer, best known for his operas. He spent much of his life working at the court of Louis XIV.

The Marche Royale, which we present this month, serves as the prologue to an opera that premiered in Paris in 1675. The festive character of this piece is expressed through a prominent trumpet part (possibly intended as a solo), alternating with a powerful French plein-jeu and concluding with an impressive grand-jeu.
