Hesse was an important figure — not only in Germany, but especially in building connections with other countries. He studied with Rinck, who had been taught by Kittel, and Kittel in turn was a pupil of J.S. Bach. Hesse later taught Lemmens, who went on to have a major influence on the Parisian organ school.
That Adolph Friedrich was shaped by the Bach tradition can clearly be heard in his setting of this hymn for the Passion season. The composition begins with a continuous quaver (eighth-note) movement that is never interrupted. Fragments of the melody can also be found in the accompaniment.
I would certainly recommend using the solo voice that you personally find most beautiful for this ever-impressive melody.
Kind regards,
André
