A Pels pipe organ in Manila has been given a new lease of life through a unique restoration project that combines traditional organ building with modern control technology.
An interesting aspect of the project is that the Pels pipe organ itself is of Dutch origin. With the integration of Johannus’ former concert organ, two well-known Dutch names in the organ world come together in the Philippines.
The instrument had served faithfully for many years, but its console and control system were due for renewal. Rather than replacing the organ, the decision was made to preserve the existing pipework and equip the instrument with a modern console solution.
At the centre of the project is Johannus’ former concert organ. The console was rebuilt as a MIDI console and connected to the pipe organ through Johannus’ in-house developed Pipe Integration Management (PIM) system. It now serves as the heart of the instrument, providing a modern and reliable control platform.
The installation was completed in close cooperation with Diego Cera Organbuilders, one of the leading organ builders in the Philippines. Their craftsmanship, combined with the flexibility of the PIM system, made it possible to modernise the organ while preserving its musical identity.
According to Cealwyn Tagle of Diego Cera Organbuilders, the integration process was exceptionally straightforward:
"PIM is the easiest and most professional integration system I have ever worked with as a pipe organ builder."
The project demonstrates how existing pipe organs can continue serving future generations without extensive modifications to the instrument itself. Modern control technology can improve reliability, expand functionality and simplify maintenance while preserving the unique character of the organ.
For Johannus, the installation also highlights the value of reuse. The concert organ that welcomed visitors to our concert hall in Ede for many years now fulfils a new role in Manila, giving the instrument a remarkable second life on the other side of the world.
