Trio sonata in B-flat major (part 2)                                                    Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel (1690-1749)

In June 2019, we promised that we would also be offering parts 2 and 3 of this trio sonata. Part 2 is therefore this month’s musical contribution.

For more information about playing the trio and about Stölzel, please revisit the Contribution mentioned above.

The middle part of a trio is almost always a peaceful part, and that’s also the case with this composition. However, it is important to play this andante with some energy; if your playing is too subdued or slow, it won’t do this part justice. If the pulse comes at the quarter note, then many of the notes will fall on this pulse, starting from the first count.

Try to create a distinction between a falling or rising motif, and between major and minor. All of a sudden you’ll find this part becomes very lively indeed.

Warm regards,
