Trio: Allein Gott in der Höh’ sei Ehr - Andreas Armsdorf (1670-1699)

First of all, on behalf of the senior management and staff, our very best wishes for 2024! We very much hope to meet each other here again every month for the Musical Contribution.

What better way to start the new year than with a melody that’s known across the world. The composer of this arrangement only reached the age of 29 and worked as an organist in the Germany city of Erfurt.

He studied under Pachelbel and that’s very clear from this trio. The melody in the pedalboard is always preceded in the soprano, creating a canon. In terms of registration I used the composer’s own directions, but there are, of course, many more options.

The first three arrangements are from contemporaries of Armsdorf, creating a Partita. You could also try using one of the old temperaments. They’re a perfect match for this instrumental idiom.
