Es ist ein Ros entsprungen, J. Bredewout (Geb.1959)

The oldest source of the lyrics for this world-renowned song dates back to the 16th century. This was most probably propagated orally in the dioceses of Trier, Speyer and Mainz.

The melody is composed based on the formula: fifth - sixth - fifth - third. A famous composer once stated: ‘This melody is like a quietly burning candle; it demands a meditative attitude and inspires silent attention and worship’.

Bredewout must have had this in mind when he wrote this work. Repeating fourths accompany a devout theme that alternates with several chorale lines. The leading stop should also meet this condition.

Wishing you an Advent season that is full of hope.
