Come Ye Sons of Art                                                                             Henry Purcell (1659-1695)

(LiVE Sample Set: Amsterdam, Vater-Müller)

Composed in 1694 and also known as ‘Ode for Queen Mary’s Birthday’, this month’s work has nine parts, but we will stick to the second part of this celebratory composition for this occasion.

The 28-bar introduction is followed by a solo piece for a countertenor, who is then joined by the full choir in bar 57.

The composition was written in a speedy ¾ bar, with a joyous and upbeat style reminiscent of dance steps. It is really the music that drives the lyrics in this composition, with the soloist and choir members singing: Come, ye Sons of Art, come away, Tune all your voices and instruments play  To celebrate this triumphant day. I picked this joyful composition to mark the Paschal month.

In terms of registration, I made the following selection:

-Introduction:   a light and clear forte

-Solo:                  super solo trumpet

-Choir:                a vibrant and rich performance

I wish you a triumphant Easter.

Warm regards,
