Prize Winners at the Organ with Harm Hoeve

Last Saturday, five prize winners took their place at the organ bench for a personal masterclass with Harm Hoeve. Each participant received individual attention, with ample time devoted to studying and refining a chosen work.

The repertoire included Choral II by César Franck and part of the Fantasia on Psalm 25 by Willem Hendrik Zwart. Musical phrasing, shaping longer lines, and structuring practice sessions were key themes throughout the day. Registration choices and the construction of a hymn prelude were also discussed in depth.

How do you begin simply and build towards a natural climax? How do you support congregational singing effectively? Small adjustments in rhythm, accompaniment and stops can make a significant difference. Participants received practical tools to apply in their own playing and teaching.

What stood out was Harm’s ability to respond to each player individually. For some, the focus lay on articulation or pedal technique; for others, on interpretation and musical architecture. The guidance was clear, practical and immediately usable.

The atmosphere was focused yet relaxed, allowing space for experimentation and questions. It was a rewarding day that offered young organists meaningful direction for their continued development.
